What were the factors that made you choose NAA to pursue your degree education?

One of the main reasons I opted to pursue my undergraduate degree with NAA was the generous module exemptions granted to graduates who have a relevant diploma from a local polytechnic. With that, students can expect to fast-track the completion of their degree way ahead of their peers who enrolled in the local varsities. On top of that, the University of Adelaide (UoA) is one of Australia’s eight leading research-intensive universities and is consistently ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide.

UoA is also committed to offer its students the opportunity to study abroad through the various global learning programmes, providing them the chance to experience living abroad while earning credits towards their Adelaide degree. Its renowned reputation coupled with the wide international exposure for students gave me the confidence that the knowledge and experience gained at NAA would establish a solid foundation for my future success in the business world.

Can you share with us why you chose this programme?

I aspire to work in the creative business industry, specifically in advertising and marketing. With the technical experience and knowledge gained from working and studying at NAA, I hope to eventually start my own business.

Further, as I had graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a Diploma in Business Studies (specialising in Marketing Communications), I was granted 50 per cent course exemptions and will graduate upon completing just 12 courses. This could entirely be done in one year which will give me a head-start to embark on my career and put the knowledge obtained into good use.

Are there any modules in particular that stand out? Why?

Out of the two trimesters that I have completed so far, Market Strategy & Project III stood out the most for me. The lecturer incorporated a simulation game component which required students to set up their own backpack company and compete against other companies formed by various groups in class.

In order to ensure the sustainability of our ‘business’, I had to work closely with my teammates and that created a greater bond between us. Additionally, the simulation game exposed us to insights of the real business world which is highly beneficial as it prepares me to deal effectively with challenges that may arise in my future business pursuits.

How has this programme benefitted you professionally and at a personal level?

The programme has helped me develop better time management skills as I had to cope with deadlines of my assignments for the different modules, all within a short period of time. In addition, I have also improved on my teamwork and networking skills as I had to work efficiently with different classmates for each assignment in order to achieve my desired grades and outcomes.

Describe your learning experience in one sentence.

NAA has provided me with a holistic experience thus far in exploring different aspects of businesses which further strengthened my dream to pursue a career in this field.

Would you recommend this programme to others and why?

Absolutely! Offered by the Adelaide Business School, the Bachelor of Commerce programme is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, awarded only to less than 5% of the business schools worldwide. With this accreditation, students can be assured that the programme will impart relevant and quality business skills that are highly sought-after in today’s economy.

What are your lecturers like and how do they enhance your learning?

Operating at the cutting edge of their disciplines, our lecturers often enthusiastically share their knowledge whilst also encouraging independent learning among ourselves.  Many of them are internationally recognised leaders with diverse research involvements in their respective fields of expertise.

With their vast network of personal contacts, our lecturers were also able to invite guest speakers from big renowned firms to share their work experiences and they closely relate to our course of studies. Such an invaluable opportunity had indeed allowed me to gain a more in-depth understanding and further insights into the global business world.

Pick 1 value from NAA’s 5 values and how this value applies to you during your learning journey with NAA. (Choose from: Excellence / Leaders / Innovation / Teamwork / Ethics)

I would select ‘Teamwork’. It is especially important since most of our coursework include group assignments. This had taught me the importance of working well with others from different backgrounds. Teamwork creates efficiency, makes the work easier and allows meaningful friendships to be forged.

Why should potential students consider your school?

NAA places a strong emphasis on providing quality education to its students, one of which is by ensuring that classes are kept at optimal sizes to achieve better lecturer-student interactions. By keeping classes small, students are better able to engage in value-adding discussions among themselves, facilitated by the lecturer to help build upon their existing knowledge.

Campus facilities around the school also support students’ learning. The spacious and comfortable study rooms are ideal for self-revision or group discussions after lessons or in between class breaks.

For a more relaxed and cosy atmosphere, there is also a Student Lounge with vending machines and comfortable furniture where students often congregate to have lunch together.

How has the scholarship helped you?

I am honoured and grateful to be one of the recipients of the Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship. This has helped to lighten the financial load of my father who is funding my tuition fees. The scholarship will also serve as an additional motivation and encouragement for me to strive harder for both my family and myself.
