Bachelor of Commerce
What were the factors that made you choose NAA to pursue your degree education?
The two main factors which attracted me to NAA were the location of the campus and reputation of the University.
NAA is a stone’s throw away from Dhoby Ghaut MRT which makes it very convenient for students to travel to and fro school. Additionally, big shopping malls like Liang Court and Plaza Singapura in the nearby vicinity, provide students with plenty meal choices before and after classes.
The University of Adelaide is a highly reputable university that is consistently ranked in the top 1 per cent of universities worldwide. It is also a member of the Group of Eight, a coalition of Australia’s leading research universities.
The Business School is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), which is awarded only to less than 5% of the world’s business schools.
Hence, I am confident that the Bachelor of Commerce programme will be highly-valued and regarded by employers.
Can you share with us why you chose this programme?
I have always been interested in Commerce, particularly in the field of marketing. A graduate from the Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Tourism and Resort Management, I was granted 50 per cent exemption, and only needed to enrol for 12 courses to complete the Bachelor of Commerce programme. This gives me an edge over my peers in the local universities as I would have earned a year of working experience at the time of their graduation.
Are there any modules in particular that stand out? Why?
It would definitely have to be Small and Family Business Perspectives. We had the opportunity to conceptualise, grow and manage a small business of our own, in competition with our peers, as part of the assignment while drawing upon theories gleaned from the course. Through this assignment, I learnt that every decision, regardless of how minute, is critical as it would then determine a business’ profits and ranking. It was indeed a good and unique experience for us as we learnt how to make business decisions wisely while taking into consideration the various risks and implications.
Describe your learning experience in one sentence.
My experience in the programme has been profoundly positive and incredibly interactive. The programme has developed my ability to decipher my surroundings from a different perspective.
Would you recommend this programme to others and why?
Definitely, without a doubt at all. The lecturers, who are flown in from the Adelaide campus to conduct lessons here follow the same assessment guidelines and standards implemented over in Australia. Students at NAA undergo the same curriculum, receive the same sets of lecture notes and sit for the same examinations as our peers on campus in Adelaide.
What are your lecturers like and how do they enhance your learning?
The lecturers are extremely knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. They possess vast working experiences and are well-connected in their respective fields. They are generous in sharing real-life examples and cases which contribute to a more holistic and engaging learning experience From time to time, we even had successful entrepreneurs as well as professionals of multinational companies coming into class as guest speakers to share their experiences on various topics with us.
Pick 1 value from NAA’s 5 values and how this value applies to you during your learning journey with NAA. (Choose from: Excellence / Leaders / Innovation / Teamwork / Ethics)
Teamwork. Most of our assignments comprise of a group project component, which taught me the importance of being able to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Not only is this value important, I believe it will also serve me well when I embark on my career in the working world.
Why should potential students consider your school?
NAA offers a world-class Australian education that is vastly different from other private institutions. To add a further dimension to their University of Adelaide education, students are greatly encouraged to participate in the global learning programme.
Students who would like to experience the Australian culture can opt to do a Semester or Winter/Summer programme at the Adelaide Campus itself while earning credits towards their degree. The more adventurous students can choose to embark on the student exchange programme, where the University has developed numerous links with other education institutions in America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions.
How has the scholarship helped you?
A privileged recipient of the Ngee Ann Kongsi scholarship, I am grateful that it has helped to lighten the financial burden of my family who is paying for my studies. Additionally, the Scholarship will definitely look good on my resume and I am confident that it will also aid in my job search in future.
